“Sick” – Künstlerin BK Foxx mit imposanten “Taxi Driver”-Mural in Brooklyn // NYC

Die New Yorker Künstlerin BK Foxx ist bekannt für den hyperrelaistischen Stil ihrer Murals, teilweise auch für die politischen Statements ihrer Wallart-Pieces. Ihr neustes Werk entstand soeben in Brooklyn und portraitiert Schauspieler Robert De Niro in seiner Rolle als Travis Bickle im Martin Scorsese-Filmdrama “Taxi Driver” aus dem Jahr 1976, welcher bekanntlich in einem blutigen Gewaltakt mündet. BK Foxx thematisiert hier das große Problem, durch Waffengewalt ausgelöster Tragödien in den USA in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten. Das Konterfeis De Niro’s ist hier von der Künstlerin gebettet in die Namen von amerikanischen Orten, welche bereits Gun Violence-Massakern heimgesucht wurden.

BK Foxx is a NY-based artist that creates powerful imagery. She’s fuses realism with social awareness about issues which she’s passionate for such as animal rights and wildlife. Recently, she visited the Low Brow Artique in Brooklyn to paint a mural titled ‘Sick,’ a striking image from the Martin Scorsese film Taxi Driver, that also illustrates how gun-violence has affected our nation.

On the left side is a complete list of paint I used for this wall. The number to the left of each color is the number of spray paint cans. On the right side is an incomplete list of places in the US where mass shootings occurred in the last several decades. The number to the left of each city is the number of casualties. Not included in those numbers are. injuries or any other measures of damage caused by these incidents. Clearly I did not anticipate how much space I would need to make the list on the right side. p.s. i recommend listening to the song “Somewhere in America” by @thealternateroutes.
